THE REASONS BEHIND

Why Employers choose Traineeships

A traineeship is a practical, structured way to build skills in your business with minimal disruption. It combines nationally recognised training with real, on-the-job experience, helping employers develop capability in a way that aligns with their organisational values and standards.

Skilled staff, built in-house

Rather than sending staff away for off-site training that may not align with workplace expectations, traineeships allow learning to happen in context. Employees apply new knowledge directly to their role, reinforcing skills through real tasks, real systems, and real experiences. This often leads to stronger skill development and better long-term outcomes for the business.

Don’t just hire for today – invest for tomorrow

From a business perspective, traineeships offer training with predictable timeframes and outcomes. They can encourage consistent standards across teams, and provide managers with a clear framework for supporting staff development. Many employers also value the opportunity to access government incentives, helping offset the cost of training without compromising quality.

Traineeships go beyond building skills – they reflect the kind of employer you choose to be. By investing in formal training, you demonstrate a visible commitment to quality, growth, and people development, helping your organisation stand out as an employer of choice and a quality business.

THE REASONS BEHIND

Why Students choose Traineeships

Students choose traineeships because they provide a practical pathway to gaining real skills, real experience, and a nationally recognised qualification—while working in a real job. If you want to learn by doing, not just by sitting in a classroom, traineeship are for you.

Earn experience, not just knowledge

With a traineeship, your training is connected directly to your role. What you learn is applied on the job, helping skills make sense faster and stick longer. You’re supported through structured training, workplace supervision, and regular check-ins, so you’re not expected to figure everything out on your own.

Traineeships can be a great option if you’re starting out, returning to work, or looking to formalise skills you’re already using. You gain hands-on experience, build confidence in a real workplace, and work toward a qualification that’s recognised across Australia.

Get paid to complete your qualification

Another benefit is that traineeships allow you to earn an income while you train. Instead of putting life on hold to study, you continue working, gaining experience, and developing professional habits that employers value. Over time, this can help you feel more job-ready and clearer about your next steps.

Traineeships also give you exposure to industry expectations—how teams work, how to manage responsibilities, and how to balance work and learning. These are skills that matter well beyond the qualification itself.

Build skills for what’s next

Whether you’re exploring a new career or strengthening your current role, a traineeship offers a supported, work-based way to learn, grow, and move forward with confidence.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What are Traineeships?

Traineeships are employment-based training arrangements that combine paid employment with formal training through a Registered Training Organisation (RTO). They cover a wide range of industries and lead to nationally recognised qualifications. Traineeships can be full-time, part-time, or school-based, providing flexibility to suit different needs.

Traineeships offer employers a practical way to grow a confident, qualified workforce while investing in their team’s skill development.

For employees, traineeships provide the opportunity to earn an income, study a nationally recognised qualification, gain real-world experience, and build industry-specific skills — creating a strong foundation for future career opportunities.

What is a School Based Traineeship?

School-based traineeships (SBATs) allow senior high school students to commence a traineeship while at school. School-based trainees complete their traineeship by the end of their HSC year. SBATs work part-time with both the on-the-job and off-the-job training contributing to their HSC.

What is the difference between a New Entrant and an Existing Worker Traineeship?

New Entrant is someone who has been employed with their current employer for less than 3 months full-time (or 12 months part-time/casual) prior to commencing the traineeship. New Entrant Traineeships in NSW are eligible for Smart and Skilled subsidised training and may also be eligible for Fee-Free Traineeships*.

* This training is subsidised by the NSW Government

An Existing Worker is someone who has been employed with their current employer for more than 3 months full-time (or 12 months part-time/casual) prior to starting the traineeship. An Existing Worker Traineeship is not usually eligible for Smart and Skilled subsidised training.

How long does a traineeship take?

The term of the traineeship is determined by the Vocational Training Order and any relevant credit applied. A traineeship can be completed early if competency-based completion is achieved and the parties agree.

What if someone has prior experience?

All Trainees will be provided the opportunity to apply for Recognition of Prior Learning or Credit Transfer.

What about an employee who is great at the job but struggles with study?

Our team will work with each Trainee to understand their needs and identify appropriate support; this may include additional appointments or visits, resources in alternate formats or accessing DAAWS funded mentoring or tutoring services.
